The Charlottesville Democratic Party established the Ora Maupin and Gene Harding scholarships to be awarded each year to deserving graduating seniors at Charlottesville High School. The two students chosen each year are awarded $750 each for the purchase of their college textbooks.
This scholarship was established in honor and memory of Ora Maupin. In an era when women were new to the professional world, she was the quintessential independent woman and the first woman ever elected to public office in the city of Charlottesville. She served as Commissioner of Revenue for 45 years and lived most of her long life in Belmont. Ora was particularly noted for her loyalty to Clark Elementary School and for her firm belief in the value of community service.
This scholarship was established in honor of L.G. (Gene) Harding and his commitment to supporting working people fairly and with decency. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Gene began his public service career in law enforcement in the city of Charlottesville. After serving as City Sheriff, he won a streak of victories to the office of City Treasurer, holding that position for almost 47 years.
