SUMMARY:"Hands Off UVA!!" Rally at the Rotunda
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to gather in urgent interdependence on the 4th of July at 1pm\, at the University of Virginia Rotunda Jefferson statue (University Avenue side) for a peaceful rally demonstrating our collective dismay at the forced resignation of UVA President Jim Ryan. \nHis ousting was an attempted hostile takeover of the University by the federal government that flies in the face of historically struggled-for ideals\, values\, and civil rights that began 250 years ago. \nA range of University and community stakeholders will speak briefly. The rally’s second part will feature an open mic for public expression (2-minute limit per person). The rally was organized by UPRISE! Creative Collective C’ville and co-sponsored by Indivisible Charlottesville.

SUMMARY:"Democracy on Tap" with Laurent Dubois\, Democracy Expert (8/11)
DESCRIPTION:Our next “Democracy on Tap” will feature guest speaker Laurent Dubois at Kardinal Hall at 3:30pm on Sunday\, August 11. \nProf. Dubois\, the John L. Nau Professor of the History and Principles of Democracy\, is Academic Director of the Karsh Institute of Democracy at UVA. He’ll speak about democracy and authoritarianism in countries around the world. \nPlease join us and invite some friends! \nWe had dozens of people at the past event\, with former US Attorney Tim Heaphy speaking about the January 6 insurrection and potential ways to patch national divisions. His suggestions included starting with speaking with people who think differently and listening to their concerns\, and perhaps mandatory national service for young people\, such as serving in communities or in parks because different kinds of people working together can find common ground.

SUMMARY:Come to the "Meetings of Opposites" Program on March 16
DESCRIPTION:The “Meetings of Opposites” programs bring together people with opposing views on politics and other issues. Henry McHenry will lead the Saturday March 16 program taking place at the Gordon Avenue Library meeting room from 1-3pm. The workshop will be timely given today’s perception wars: \nAfter a video demonstrating the mechanism of perception which produces optical illusions and prevents accurate assessment of visual information\, we notice that the same mechanism seems to be at work in the ways we interact with each other. We are swamped in perception wars\, because the assumptions that keep us in our positions\, Us-Against-Them\, reside in narratives that own us and that we can’t see out of. To experience a way of being together different from the one perception enables and enforces\, we will engage with each other in physical exercises and activities\, some as simple as a handshake.

SUMMARY:"Turn Out the Vote Thursdays" at Ix Art Park
DESCRIPTION:“Turn Out the Vote Thursdays” 4-7pm at the Ix Art Park on the Brazos Tacos lawn\, weather permitting. Come when and for how long your schedule and mood dictate; it needn’t be every week or the entire three hours! \nFor the past three years\, we’ve been fortunate to have so many dedicated people join us at Ix Art Park to eat\, drink\, chat\, and pitch in together to help our Democratic candidates win. In 2022\, we had 100+ volunteers who attended at least one time\, with many attending almost every week. If you’ve joined us before\, please join us again. If you haven’t tried it yet\, come on down and meet fellow Dems and enjoy yourself while working for a big win on November 7! \nAt various times the group will be: \n\nWriting postcards and making follow-up phone calls to newly registered voters. That combination has been very successful\, resulting in this group voting at a consistent 75-80% rate in 2021-2023.\nDistributing “walk sheet” name and address lists of Dem-leaning people for our campaign canvassers to visit.\nSending some specific issue-message postcards (a new idea we’re considering).\nWriting postcards and phoning Albemarle residents we’ve registered.\nWriting postcards and phoning for campaigns near Charlottesville.\n\nIf you can\, bring a chair to sit on and a clipboard or something similar to write on.
