SUMMARY:Fish Fry Fundraiser with Senator Louise Lucas
DESCRIPTION:Our big annual fundraiser will be the long-awaited\, much discussed fish fry… with special guest Senator Louise Lucas! \n\nWHEN: Friday\, June 24\, 6-8pm\nWHERE: on the lawn of the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center\, 223 4th Street NW\n\nCome meet and hear from Louise Lucas\, President pro tempore of the Virginia Senate (and social media star famous for her barbed sense of humor!). VA 5th District candidate Josh Throneburg and VA 5th Chair Patricia Harper-Tunley will also be on hand to say a few words. \nThe outdoor setting will let us get together in person (finally!) in a safe way to catch up\, hang out\, and meet new people; it will be great fun! And your ticket purchases fund our November election work and everything else we do this year. \nIndividual tickets are $15\, “bring a friend” tickets are $30\, and children under 12 are only $5. \nSponsorships by individuals and companies (at various higher levels that include the dinner) make up the bulk of our proceeds (i.e. our annual budget!)\, so if you can please choose one of the sponsor options when you get your tickets. \nTickets are now available at https://secure.actblue.com/donate/demsfishfry. Additional event details are there too\, e.g. a vegetarian option is available. \nPlease buy your tickets as soon as possible. We won’t be able to accommodate more than a handful of walk-ins without reservations (if any)\, so order your tickets now before you forget!

SUMMARY:"Raised/Razed" Movie Discussion with the Filmmakers!
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Lorenzo Dickerson and writer Jordy Yager\, local creators of the very well-received May 2022 movie Raised/Razed about the life and destruction of Vinegar Hill\, will speak at 6:30pm on July 28th at the Central Library. You can attend this event either in person (Swanson Case Room 125\, formerly named the McIntire Room) or  via this Zoom link. \nLorenzo and Jordy will share hard truths about the federal Urban Renewal program and its impact on scores of American cities (Durham\, NC is also profiled) through a deep dive into the history and demolition of Vinegar Hill\, Charlottesville’s oldest African American neighborhood. They chart the lives of its residents as they faced racially discriminatory policies and a city government that saw them as obstacles to “progress”\, and they identify some of the most important take-aways from this history. \nMany of us watched Raised/Razed at its Jefferson School or PBS premieres; if you haven’t seen it yet it’s only an hour long and is available at no charge on the VPM website <https://vpm.org/raisedrazed>. Please watch (or re-watch!) the film before their talk and come with questions about (1) their journalistic & cinematic storytelling and (2) what they learned in the process of making the film. \nNote — this is the first in-person speaker event in our co-sponsored series with Albemarle Dems since Covid began!

SUMMARY:Zoom Event with Oscar-nominated Director of "Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down" (8/3 6:30pm)
DESCRIPTION:Oscar-nominated documentary director Julie Cohen (past works include the acclaimed “RBG” about Ruth Bader Ginsburg) will give a special Zoom talk + Q&A to Charlottesville on August 3rd at 6:30pm for her just-released film “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down” (see trailer here). The new movie tells the extraordinary story of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ relentless and ultimately successful fight to recover from a 2011 assassination attemp\, and her new life as one of the most effective activists in the battle against gun violence. \nZoom link to the event:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83200876457 \nThe documentary is now playing in theaters nationwide (has been at Violet Crown locally) and on August 5th becomes available for viewing on Amazon\, AppleTV\, iTunes\, and other streaming services. Produced in partnership with CNN Films and Time Studios\, the film features: \n\nexclusive stunning videos taken in the weeks following her near-death\na close-up portrait of her marriage to former-astronaut now Arizona US Senator Mark Kelly that has sustained her through her ordeal\ninterviews with Pres. Barack Obama\, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand\, Rep. Jim Clyburn\, and other friends and colleagues\n\nJulie’s team spent two years following Gabby\, one of our nation’s most inspirational figures in the fight against gun violence; CBS News’ Jane Pauley last week called her “the face of a movement“. In her Q&A she will answer audience questions about Gabby and her special relationship with Sen. Kelly\, provide insights into our national gun debate\, and share behind-the-scenes anecdotes from her work with Gabby and other documentaries. \nWe’ve organized the event\, which is co-sponsored by Moms Demand Action Charlottesville\, The B.U.C.K Squad\, and Students Demand Action at UVA (the latter three groups are not affiliated with the Democratic Party) to continue bringing attention to the curse of gun violence and spotlight the work citizen activists are doing locally and nationwide. \nAbout Julie Cohen — Julie is the Academy Award® nominated director and producer of RBG (Magnolia\, CNN Films\, 2018) along with Betsy West. Other films she’s directed with West include the Academy Award shortlisted JULIA (Sony Pictures Classics)\, the Peabody Award winning My Name is Pauli Murray (Amazon Studios) and their latest: Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down (CNN Films\, Briarcliff Entertainment). Previous films she’s directed include American Veteran (which screened at the Virginia Film Festival)\, The Sturgeon Queens\, and I Live to Sing. Before she started making documentaries\, Julie was a longtime producer for Dateline NBC.

SUMMARY:Ézé Amos "Town Hall" event on his A12 Downtown Mall Photo Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Charlottesville’s only city-supported event commemorating the 5th anniversary of A12 is the outdoor photo exhibit The Story of Us: Reclaiming the Narrative of #Charlottesville through Portraits of Community Resilience. The Exhibit’s creator\, local photojournalist and artist Ézé Amos\, will lead a town hall-style presentation in which he’ll both explain the genesis and intentionality behind his exhibit (in conversation with Jefferson School Executive Director Dr. Andrea Douglas) and  offer attendees a chance to share their emotions and memories of their experiences of that weekend.  Join us in-person in the Charlottesville Downtown Library’s Swanson Case Room or on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85683422230 \nThe exhibit’s photos will be mounted on trees all along the Downtown Mall\, and each photo will have a QR code linking to a roughly 3-minute recording of the person in the photo describing that moment captured in the photo in their own words and voice. The photos will be installed August 9-10. \nÉzé created the exhibit to overturn caricatured perceptions and narratives of Charlottesville as no more than the place where the Alt-right perpetrated violence and spewed hate in 2017. The exhibit elevates the equally important truth that our community came together in resistance — holding space\, being brave\, being vulnerable\, showing love for each other in the face of that assault. \nYou won’t want to miss these powerful presentations and the chance to interact with Ézé about his interactive exhibit; please spread the word\, please bring family and friends!

SUMMARY:Cville Dems Host Legal Superstar Dahlia Lithwick for September 22nd Event
DESCRIPTION:Legal journalist/podcaster Dahlia Lithwick\, one of Charlottesville’s very favorite ex-residents\, returns “home” Thursday evening\, September 22 at 6:45pm to PVCC’s beautiful Dickinson Auditorium to talk about her new book\, Lady Justice: Women\, the Law\, and the Battle to Save America. She’ll be in conversation with Amy Woolard\, Chief Program Officer for the ACLU of Virginia\, with audience Q&A to follow. This special Cville Dems-organized event is free and open to all\, no reservations required. \nYou’ve very likely seen her on MSNBC and CNN\, listened to her influential “Amicus” podcast\, read her columns in Slate and New York Times… now come out and see her in person. \nLady Justice profiles the women lawyers who worked tirelessly to hold the line against the most chaotic and malign presidency in living memory. There was Roberta Kaplan\, the famed commercial litigator\, who sued the neo-Nazis here for their 2017 “Unite the Right” violence here. And Sally Yates\, the acting attorney general of the United States\, who refused to sign off on the Muslim travel ban. And Becca Heller\, the founder of a refugee assistance program who brought the fight over the travel ban to the airports. And\, of course\, Stacey Abrams\, whose efforts to protect the voting rights of millions of Georgians may well have been what won the Senate for the Democrats in 2020. \n \nWe’ll have copies of her book available for sale at the event: please buy a copy to support Dahlia. It will make a great holiday gift for anyone\, but especially for that idealistic daughter\, granddaughter\, or niece of yours! \nWe’ll also be giving a shout-out to the local nonprofits who are doing the good work locally in some of the areas covered by her book: Protection of Immigrants and Refugees (IRC and International Neighbors and Sin Barreras)\, Sexual Assault and Harassment (S.A.R.A.)\, Women’s Rights (Charlottesville NOW)\, Abortion and Reproductive Rights (Blue Ridge Abortion Fund and Planned Parenthood)\, Racial Justice and Voting Rights (NAACP\, Jefferson School African American Heritage Center\, League of Women Voters\, and Virginia Organizing). Note: these groups are neither affiliated with the Democratic Party nor necessarily endorse our policy positions. \nDahlia will be “in conversation” with Amy Woolard\, a writer and attorney who’s lived and worked in Charlottesville for over 30 years\, much of that time working on civil rights policy and legislation. Amy is now Chief Program Officer for the ACLU of Virginia and previously was Director of Policy for the Legal Aid Justice Center. Her poems and nonfiction have appeared in such publications as The New Yorker\, The Paris Review\, The Guardian\, and Virginia Quarterly Review. \nBio: Dahlia Lithwick is the senior legal correspondent at Slate and host of Amicus\, Slate’s award-winning biweekly podcast about the law.  Her work has also appeared in The New York Times\, Harper’s\, The New Yorker\, The Washington Post\, The New Republic\, and Commentary\, among other places. Lithwick won a 2013 National Magazine Award for her columns on the Affordable Care Act. She was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in October\, 2018. \n

SUMMARY:Prof. Danielle Citron on Privacy\, Surveillance\, and Love in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:UVA Law Professor and MacArthur Fellow Danielle Citron\, an international expert on online privacy and abuse\, will speak about the latest developments at the intersection of technology\, public policy\, and our daily Internet-driven lives at 6:45pm Tuesday October 11th at the Downtown Library’s Swanson Case Room and also on Zoom; please mark your calendars to join us! Prof. Citron will be “in conversation” with UVA History Prof. William Hitchcock\, co-host of the Democracy in Danger podcast. Q&A will follow. \nCopies of her new book The Fight for Privacy: Protecting Dignity\, Identity\, and Love in the Digital Age (coming out the week before she speaks!) will be available for purchase. From her publisher’s website:\n \n“The essential road map for understanding—and defending—your right to privacy in the twenty-first century. \nPrivacy is disappearing. From our sex lives to our workout routines\, the details of our lives once relegated to pen and paper have joined the slipstream of new technology. As a MacArthur fellow and distinguished professor of law at the University of Virginia\, acclaimed civil rights advocate Danielle Citron has spent decades working with lawmakers and stakeholders across the globe to protect what she calls intimate privacy—encompassing our bodies\, health\, gender\, and relationships. When intimate privacy becomes data\, corporations know exactly when to flash that ad for a new drug or pregnancy test. Social and political forces know how to manipulate what you think and who you trust\, leveraging sensitive secrets and deepfake videos to ruin or silence opponents. And as new technologies invite new violations\, people have power over one another like never before\, from revenge porn to blackmail\, attaching life-altering risks to growing up\, dating online\, or falling in love. \nA masterful new look at privacy in the twenty-first century\, The Fight for Privacy takes the focus off Silicon Valley moguls to investigate the price we pay as technology migrates deeper into every aspect of our lives: entering our bedrooms and our bathrooms and our midnight texts; our relationships with friends\, family\, lovers\, and kids; and even our relationship with ourselves. \nDrawing on in-depth interviews with victims\, activists\, and advocates\, Citron brings this headline issue home for readers by weaving together visceral stories about the countless ways that corporate and individual violators exploit privacy loopholes. Exploring why the law has struggled to keep up\, she reveals how our current system leaves victims—particularly women\, LGBTQ+ people\, and marginalized groups—shamed and powerless while perpetrators profit\, warping cultural norms around the world…” \n \nProf. Danielle Keats Citron teaches Law at the University of Virginia. A 2019 MacArthur Fellow\, she serves as the vice president of the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative and lives here in Charlottesville. Her latest book\, The Fight for Privacy: Protecting Dignity\, Identity\, and Love in the Digital Age\, will be out in October 2022. Her first book\, “Hate Crimes in Cyberspace” (Harvard University Press\, 2014)\, was named one of the 20 Best Moments for Women in 2014 by the editors of Cosmopolitan magazine.\n\nFor the past decade\, Citron has worked with lawmakers\, law enforcement and tech companies to combat online abuse and to protect intimate privacy. In June 2019\, she testified before Congress about the national security and privacy risks of deepfakes. She has been involved in reform efforts around the regulation of online platforms. In October 2019\, she testified before Congress about Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. From 2014 to 2016\, Citron served as an advisor to then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris and as a member of Harris’ Task Force to Combat Cyber Exploitation and Violence Against Women. In 2011\, Citron testified about misogynistic cyber hate speech before the Inter-Parliamentary Committee on Anti-Semitism at the House of Commons in the United Kingdom. Since 2011\, she has been a member of Facebook’s Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery Task Force and an adviser and a member of Twitter’s Trust and Safety Task Force and as an adviser to the company since 2009. She is an adviser to the dating app Bumble\, the music streaming service Spotify\, and video sharing platform TikTok.\n\n\n \nProf. William Hitchcock’s work and teaching focus on the global history of the 20th Century\, in particular the era of the two world wars and the cold war. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1994\, working under the supervision of Paul Kennedy\, and taught at Yale for six years (and served as the Associate Director of International Security Studies). He is now writing “FDR and the Dictators: Fascism\, Democracy and the Awakening of America\,” which explores reactions in the United States to the rise of fascism in Europe from the 1920s to 1941. \n\n
