Our “Turn Out the Vote Thursdays” gets a National Shoutout!

Posted on October 31, 2024

Screenshot of "Grassroots Connector" article by Dan Doernberg about Cville Dems and Rural GroundGame doing textbanking during Election 2024The Cville Dems and Rural GroundGame (RGG) are featured in a new text banking article that appeared in “Grassroots Connector” yesterday, a national newsletter for grassroots political group leaders (like Lynlee Thorne of Rural GroundGame) working to amplifying the power and the voice of grassroots citizen activists (people like you!).

The article, written by our own Dan Doernberg, was based on background information from Frances Summers and Mary Ann Harris and included perspectives from Thursday volunteers Mark Hall, Andi Goodman, and Annette Owens as well as tips from RGG’s Abby Garber. Check it out!

Bon Voyage Bekah Saxon!

Posted on June 8, 2023

photo of Bekah Saxon holding her VEA namebadgeBekah Saxon has moved from Charlottesville to take a job with the Connecticut Education Association, after many many years of great work here:
  • Her “day job” was organizing teachers with the Virginia Education Association, where she earned a major victory in March when the Charlottesville School Board became only the fourth division in Virginia to give its employees collective bargaining rights.
  • She served for years as Secretary (a stalwart on the Executive Committee, providing context and history whenever she could), as party co-chair 2020-2021 with Sharon Cannon Webb, and a fierce Voter Protection advocate who helped organize our local efforts in recent years (and our ace logistics person on Election Days, spearheading the gathering of materials to give to arriving voters and water bottles and other supplies for our volunteers).
We wish her and her very civically engaged wife Charlene Green (leaving later this year) and their amazing son Max the very best in this new phase of their lives… but both will be terribly missed locally!
Anyone who might be willing to help cover Bekah’s Voter Protection duties (even very short term!) should contact John McLaren at cvilledemschair@gmail.com .

Clay Jones Cartoons from the Latest Newsletter

Posted on April 15, 2023

A Tennessee Republican elephant kicks Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, who were holding a bullhorn and signs reading "Stop Gun Violence" and "Gun Reform", down the steps (presumably of the state house). The elephant says "Being uppity is worse than school shootings and insurrections" The Stormy Daniels trial judge, Juan Merchan, tells Trump "Please refrain from making statements that can incite violence or civil unrest". Trump, flanked by two of his dumbfounded-looking lawyers, says "Whever, you Trump-hating judge picked by a globalist-funded racist animal district attorney".Lady Justice, blindfolded and holding a sword, is smiling while giving the "You can't see me" hand gesture to a grimmacing ex-Pres. Trump. A middle-aged white man labeled Anti-Choice Groups is pushing a grocery cart with 2 Trump look-alikes in it (one's coffee mug reads "Ban Choice", the other "Ban Black Voters"). The man is wondering which of the four Trump look-alikes still on the shelves to choose next; their coffee mugs read "Ban Muslims", "Ban Mexicans", "Ban Woke", and "Ban Science".
