5th District

Volunteer Efforts to Win in November are Gearing Up!

Posted on May 24, 2024

3 Cville Dem volunteers registering 2 new voters at our tent June 2022As soon as we know who the Democratic 5th District candidate will be, Get Out the Vote Thursdays will resume on Thursday, June 27 at IX Park. We’ll then meet every Thursday to canvass, phone bank, text bank (new for us), and/or write postcards. We’ll be reaching out to specific potential voters we identify in the City of Cville and the 5th District, and also coordinating with the campaigns to help them reach their targeted individuals. Together we can reach out to thousands of registered voters and turn them into actual Democratic votes this November!

We hope you’ll join us!

In the meantime, if your fingers are itching to start writing postcards, there are two groups (unaffiliated with the Cville Dems) with earlier meetup times:

  • Mondays from 10-12 at the Dunlora Club House; for more information, contact Mary Farrell at 703-655-3867 or wmekmf118@gmail.com.
  • Donna Shaunessey has organized a Postcards and Pastry meeting Friday May 24, 1-3pm; for details contact shaunesey@hotmail.com.

Voter registration efforts are already going strong. If you’d like to participate, please contact Suzanne (suzemichels@gmail.com) if you know of a local event or location ripe for our voter registration and/or rights restoration efforts or if you’d like to join the voter registration team!

Focus on Fifth District Candidates: Gary Terry

Posted on May 10, 2024

(We’ll be featuring the Fifth District Congressional candidates in this publication in random order, picked from a hat. This wording is taken directly from their campaign websites.)

Portrait photo of a smiling Gary Terry wearing a blue pinstripe suit and light blue open collar shirt.THE COST SHOULDN’T KILL US!

Today, Gary confronts the urgent matter of price gouging in essential goods. To those shifting from rightful profit to cruel invasion of our essential supplies: step aside! Gary steps up to implementing strong measures that ensure consumers are protected and prices remain fair.

WOMEN’S HEALTH & RIGHTS

We face those who would deny a woman her rightful autonomy, who would tether us to a single narrative of family and choice. To them, our chorus rises: Step aside! We STEP UP for the sanctity of choice, for the liberty to forge families in all their diverse forms, to cherish and to nurture love that knows the bounds of respect and mutual consent.

GUN SAFETY & LIBERTY UNITED

When the specter of gun violence haunts our schools, our streets, what do we hear? Thoughts, prayers, and yet—hesitation. No more. To those who delay, who defer: Step aside! We are here to STEP UP, to enshrine safety alongside liberty, to uphold the promise of a nation secure and at peace.

In 130 Days We’ll Nominate a President – Do You Want to be Involved?

Posted on April 16, 2024

We’ll have a brief full Cville Dems meeting followed by a Caucus in Charlottesville on Monday, April 22, in the Swanson Room, Central Library branch (explained below). Doors will open at 6pm, followed by the meeting 6:30-6:50pm. Registration for the Caucus will begin at 7:00pm, and the Caucus will begin at 7:30pm.

The Caucus is an event to elect Charlottesville delegates and alternates to attend both the Fifth Congressional District Democratic Convention (May 18 in Fluvanna County) and the DPVA State Convention (June 22 in Richmond). If you’d like to be elected as a Charlottesville delegate or alternate, you must pre-file (see article just below).

We need to elect 14 delegates plus three alternates at the Caucus – yes, we need 17 people to volunteer for this important Democratic representation of Charlottesville at both the Fifth District convention and the DPVA State convention in Richmond. Delegates must attend both conventions. It’s satisfying and enjoyable to be part of this political process, which goes all the way to determining the next President and Vice President.

Read more information in the formal Call to Caucus, which is on the Cville Dems website here.
