Dems Keep Control of VA Senate with Special Election Wins

Posted on January 16, 2025

Headshots of JJ Singh and Kannan Srinivasan, winning Democratic candidates in Virginia's January 7, 2025 special electionsThree special elections were held on Jan. 7 for two VA Senate seats and one House of Delegates seat. In all three cases the party that previously held the seats retained them, so the Dems retained overall control of both chambers.

In Loudoun County, Democrat Kannan Srinivasan defeated Republican Tumay Harding in the VA-32 Senate race to succeed Suhas Subramanyam, the Dem elected to the U.S. House in November… and Democrat JJ Singh beat Republican Ram Venkatachalam to win Srinivasan’s vacated VA-26 House of Delegates seat.

In the 3rd race, to fill the VA-10 Senate seat that John McGuire vacated to primary Bob Good and then win the VA-05 House of Representatives race, Democrat Jack Trammell lost to Republican Luther Cifers.

Gov. Youngkin still presides as a Republican governor; more on the November 2025 gubernatorial race soon!

Help Jack Trammell Get Elected by Phone Banking!

Posted on January 2, 2025

A special election is coming this Tuesday, January 7, and there’s an important phone banking opportunity. Jack Trammell would like volunteers to help him win the VA Senate District 10 seat John McGuire vacated when he unfortunately won the 5th District race. Trammel is the Democratic nominee in the special election for the seat (his nomination received strong support from the SD-10 Democratic Nominating Committee).

Note that Senate District 10 covers a lot of our Fifth Congressional District. It borders Charlottesville and Albemarle County, and consists of part or all of the following counties: Amelia, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico (one tiny part), Louisa (Jack’s Home County), Powhatan, and Prince Edward. It includes the more Democratic and populated areas of Ashland, Lake Monticello, and Farmville.

The biggest way to help is to make calls and reach as many voters as possible (some sessions start today!):

Support Dems Candidates in the Jan. 7 Special Elections!

Posted on December 25, 2024

From Our Albemarle Dems Friends (last newsletter):

If you have any energy left during the year-end break, writing a few postcards for the January 7 special elections could influence the makeup of the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates!

Control of the VA Assembly hinges on two fast-approaching special elections. In both races, Postcards to Voters needs volunteers to write postcards and GOTV for Dems by Dec. 26! Donate and learn more here:

  • Kannan Srinivasan in Senate District 32
  • JJ Singh in House District 26

These special elections aren’t just about Virginia, though — they’ll set the tone for the nation in 2025, notes the Democratic Party of Virginia in an email. If we win these races, we’ll be able to keep fighting for working families, reproductive rights, and a stronger democracy. But if we lose, we’ll be giving Republicans a big head start in the next election cycle.

Virginia is the only state in the South with full abortion access and a Democratic firewall against MAGA extremism. The outcome of these elections won’t just affect Virginians but everyone in the South who’s counting on us.

We pick ourselves up and we move forward.

This election season was full of good energy, in spite of some of the outcomes. As co-chairs of the Cville Dems, we were thrilled to have so many volunteers helping in so many ways. Your commitment to work up to and on Election Day at the polls shows how strong our party can be.

We just wanted to give you a huge thank you and say we must continue to work for a better country. We’re grateful for all you’ve done and continue to do.

In unity,
