Josh Goes to the White House to Discuss Rural America!

Posted on May 24, 2024

Cville Dems co-chair Josh Throneburg wearing a suit and tie chats with other attendees at the White House rural summit called Investing In Rural America. Television screens and an American flag are behind them.[Cville Dems cochair Josh Throneburg shared this account with us.]

Six weeks ago I received an unexpected invitation to the White House for a ‘Rural Communities in Action’ event. The Biden Administration wanted to feature its historic investments in rural communities across the country as well as hear from people on the ground about the work they are doing.

After clearing two separate security stations, I made it ‘on Campus’, and headed to the event.

About 100 people were invited to attend from all across the U.S. The gentleman in front of me was a county manager in rural Nevada, a young woman from Puerto Rico who was going to college on an Agricultural Scholarship was in the front row, there was a mayor from a small town in Wisconsin, and many more.

The primary speakers at the event were Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack; Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow, who is heading up the new Farm Bill; and Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg.

Secretary Buttigieg talked at length about investments in rural America, especially infrastructure investments that benefit rural communities. Biden’s Infrastructure Bill provides for clean water, high-speed internet, new roads and bridges and much, much more. Secretary Buttigieg also noted how his office is working to remove the red tape that can make it difficult and tedious for rural entities to apply for government sponsored loans and grants.

Senator Stabenow focused her remarks on the Farm Bill. This is the third time she has led the charge to pass a farm bill and she talked both about the exciting investments that they are working on for this bill, but also about the incredible frustrations at how dysfunctional Washington is right now. She said that working on this bill has been much, much harder than before.

Finally, Secretary Vilsack masterfully painted the picture of rural decline over the last 50 years. He talked about how we have lost over 500,000 farming families in that time; how there are counties across the country that have been in persistent poverty (20%+ poverty for at least 30 years or more) and how a high majority of those counties are rural. But he not only described the problem, he inspired with the work of the Biden Administration to turn the tide. He noted how in recent years rural populations are finally beginning to grow again and how, during Biden’s first term, over 50 counties have been taken off the persistent poverty list. He described, in detail, the work that was being done to revive rural communities, and it was exhilarating.

I walked out of the White house that afternoon with lots of thoughts but one major takeaway — we have to give this Administration four more years to expand on the amazing work it is doing. I know a lot of rural residents are Republicans, and that Republicans claim to care about rural voters… but talk is cheap. It is Democratic policies around climate, infrastructure, jobs, agriculture, and much more that actually benefit rural communities. Let’s keep doing the work, and maybe do a bit better job of bragging about it along the way, so that rural voters can see the difference electing Democrats makes!

Talking Points on Vice President Kamala Harris’ Achievements

Posted on May 10, 2024

People aren’t talking enough about Kamala Harris and her accomplishments. Tell friends and family:

Official portrait of Vice President Kamala Harris wearing a blue blazer with an American flag in the background.

  • As Vice President, she has worked to bring people together to advance opportunity, deliver for families, and protect fundamental freedoms across the country.
  • She has led the fight for the freedom of women to make decisions about their own bodies.
  • She has also worked for the freedom to live safe from gun violence.
  • She has worked to keep elections sound.
  • She has supported national efforts to drink clean water and breathe clean air.
  •  While making history at home as an African American and Asian American, she is also representing the nation abroad – embarking on more than a dozen foreign trips, traveling to more than 19 countries, and meeting with more than 150 world leaders to strengthen critical global alliances.
  • The Vice President has been a trusted partner to President Joe Biden as they work together to deliver monumental achievements that are life changing for millions of Americans.
  • Together, they have invested in the economy to create a record number of jobs and keep unemployment low. Their work has led to more small business creation in a two-year period than any previous administration.

Winning in November, Option #3 — Supporting Other VA Races

Posted on August 31, 2023

Republicans control the House of Delegates and the Governor’s mansion, and Dems barely hold the Senate; if Republicans take the Senate, then Virginia will become Florida, which means forced childbirth laws, schools teaching whitewashed history, “don’t-say-gay” laws, and other measures to erase LGBTQ youth.

We can’t let this happen; all Dems need to help in some way. Here are four non-local races where our help can make a difference:

  • The state party’s political staff say that two must-win races are Senate District 17 (Delegate Clint Jenkins looking to move up) and Senate District 24 (incumbent Senator Monty Mason running in a redrawn district). These races aren’t in the neighborhood, but if you can send a few bucks, it can help us retain the Senate!
  • In the not-so-far-away HD-57, Western Henrico/Eastern Goochland, Charlottesville native Susanna Gibson is running in a no-incumbent, competitive district against a Republican who on Sept. 5 was secretly recorded talking about abortion saying he’s pro-life and “further restrictions might not be possible unless Republicans gain more seats in the legislature.” We need to win this seat to have a chance at a House of Delegates Democratic majority. January 6 insurrectionist John McGuire represented about 55% of HD57 voters in the old HD56, so we have MAGA voters to overcome!
  • Lily Franklin is running for the HD-41 seat, around Blacksburg. Charlottesville Dems know her well from her excellent work on the Josh Throneburg campaign, and she’s exactly the sort of person we need in the House! She’s in a right-leaning district, but we believe Lily has a fighting chance if we pull together. The Thursdays at Ix group will be helping her campaign, possibly including a road trip to knock on doors there.

Whatever you choose to do, please do something to help the good guys hold the Senate and regain the House! Thank you!

Helping Dems Outside Our District: Rural Ground Game

Posted on May 25, 2023

Logo of Rural GroundGame showing a stylized stalk of grain with the words "Est. 2019" underneathIf your stomach churns when you only see red campaign signs in the surrounding counties, there’s something you can do about it!
Rural GroundGame (RGG) provides services and support to brave candidates in conservative rural areas who are usually minimally funded and swimming upstream in every way. RGG is currently talking with almost 30 campaigns that need assistance and intend to expand that number over the summer. In 2019, rural campaigns across the Commonwealth saw a 3-point increase in votes on average, but the campaigns that RGG helped (in its first year of operation!) saw an increase of 11 points!
And note:
  • Even when rural candidates don’t win, their presence in a race boosts Democratic turnout, and that can make a big difference in statewide races.
  • As Dems start competing meaningfully everywhere, Republicans have to divert some money from more competitive races.
RGG’s political director, Lynlee Thorne, will be our guest speaker at the June 2 Summer Bash; come out and hear from her directly about why this work is so important!
Let your friends in the Northern Virginia area know that Sen. Tim Kaine will be headlining a special RGG “Evening to Support Rural Democrats” tomorrow (Friday) evening; info and tickets are here.
