Voter Registration

Volunteering for Campaign Efforts and Voter Registration to Get Out The Vote (GOTV)

Posted on May 11, 2024

Graphic with white background reading "Get Out the Vote!" with all words in blue letters except the word "out" and exclamation point in red.Cville Dems will resume our Thursday Get Out the Vote efforts at IX Park after the June 18 primary election, from June 27 through October 31. As during the past four years, we’ll send postcards with voting information to anyone who has registered since January 1, 2024, until voter registration ends.

[In the meantime, if your fingers are itching to start writing postcards, there’s a (unaffiliated with Cville Dems) group meeting on Mondays from 10-12 at the Dunlora Club House. For more information, contact Mary Farrell at 703-655-3867 or wmekmf118@gmail.com.  Also, May 24, 1-3pm with Donna Shaunessey, mail to: shaunesey@hotmail.com.]

Once early voting starts in September, we’ll call and remind them of the different ways to vote in Cville. Then, hopefully, precinct captains will coordinate a door knock for each new voter. We hope to to coordinate with Albemarle County Dems to reach out to their new voters as well.

We’ll also be mailing postcards, making phone calls, and knocking on the doors of Cville voters who voted in the 2020 Presidential election but haven’t voted since, urging them to once again exercise their right to vote!

But…postcard writing is just one of the many things we do on Thursday nights. We coordinate weekly with campaigns to launch canvassors, and have phone banks and text banks. So…for one night each week, volunteers from Cville and Albemarle County can come together to do whatever volunteer activity they choose while enjoying the companionship of fellow Dems.

This year, we’ll also be working closely with Rural Ground Game to increase the Democratic voter turnout in the 5th District as well as other rural Congressional Districts. We’re not sure what they’ll call on us to do, other than phone banking, text banking, and postcard writing.

RIGHT NOW, we need:

  • volunteers to register new voters all over the city—at farmers’ markets, senior living communities, City of Promise, UVA Move-in Day, and many businesses and restaurants. If interested, email Suzanne Michels, suzemichels@gmail.com
  • volunteers at Cville Dems tables at all polling places on June 18. If interested, email Mary Ann Harris, harrisma49@gmail.com.
  • volunteers to do issue-related text banking for Rural Ground Game to the 5th District and other rural Congressional Districts. If interested, email Mary Ann Harris, harrisma49@gmail.com.

Join the Voter Registration Team!

Posted on October 20, 2023

3 Cville Dem volunteers registering 2 new voters at our tent June 2022Our wonderful voter registration team, led by Suzanne Michels and Barbara Shenefield, is very active in the lead-up to Election Day: registering new voters (including those who’ve recently moved to or within our area), helping voters figure out where they can vote, and helping folks who need to have their voting rights restored file the necessary paperwork.

There are few things more satisfying than signing up a new voter! We’d love to have more folks pitch in, and if you’re even a little bit of an extrovert, you’ll enjoy it! Email suzemichels@gmail.com if you might be interested or have questions!

Voter Registration Team — Recertification Time!

Posted on July 20, 2023

Graphic showing 5 fingers, index finger pointing at the viewer, with 4 blocks of rectangles reading "We" "need" (both white letters on blue background) "You" (white letters on red background) "To Register Voters" (black letters on white background)Everyone on the Voter Registration Team (and anyone who’d like to join!) needs to be certified each year, defined as July 1-June 30; even folks who’ve done it for years still need to recertify. The two online options, self-study or instructor-led online sessions, are explained on the VA Dept of Elections website. The earlier people sign up the better!

Primary Time = Voter Registration Time

  • Early voting for the Democratic Primary (which in Charlottesville more or less determines the winners of the November General Elections!) continues through June 17 (Mondays-Fridays, and there will be Saturday voting on 6/10 and 6/17).
  • Do same-day registration when you early vote now through 6/17 at your Registrar’s Office.
  • Vote on Election Day 6/20 any time from 6am-7pm at your local precinct (when you use same-day registration at your precinct, you vote with a provisional ballot, which will be counted unless there’s some other problem).

Related Notes

  • As of Thursday morning, only 2 candidates had turned in paperwork to run for School Board (non-partisan seats)… and no others appear to be in the pipeline per the City Registrar. Anyone who might be interested in running can visit the State Board of Elections website, or call 434-970-3250, or email vote@charlottesville.org.
  • As of last week, Charlottesville led the state in early voting!!
  • City Council approved some changes to precinct boundaries and polling locations that took effect on April 7, in time for the June primaries. Around May 1 the Registrar’s Office sent postcards to all registered Charlottesville voters; if you didn’t get one, or if have any questions about voting or your voting status, call the City of Charlottesville Registrar at 434-970-3250 (Albemarle readers should call the County Registrar at 434-972-4173).
  • Whenever you cast your ballot, bring an ID that meets Virginia’s criteria (see lists of acceptable IDs in English, Spanish, Korean, andVietnamese). If you don’t have an ID, or forget to bring one, you can sign a form affirming your identity and you’ll still be able to vote a regular ballot.

Voter Registration Time = VR Team Time!

Posted on June 8, 2023

Graphic showing 5 fingers, index finger pointing at the viewer, with 4 blocks of rectangles reading "We" "need" (both white letters on blue background) "You" (white letters on red background) "To Register Voters" (black letters on white background)Our wonderful voter registration team, led by Suzanne Michels and Barbara Shenefield, registered voters for the Democratic Primary up to the last minute; now registration moves to the Registrar’s Office (see above for times). The VR team will be at the Ix Market the next two Saturdays to educate folks about where to vote and who’s on the ballot.
There are few things more satisfying than signing up a new voter! You can visit this online signup form to see what dates we need people. We’d love to have more folks pitch in, and if you’re even a little bit of an extrovert, you’ll enjoy it! Or email suzemichels@gmail.com if you might be interested.
On a related front… we’re looking for volunteers for the June 20 primary so we can staff a table at each polling location (and the two discontinued ones, Tonsler and Alumni Hall), to thank voters for coming out and hand out information about upcoming events, newsletter, volunteer opportunities, etc.
