Dear Dems,
Let’s be clear: We’re facing a constitutional crisis of previously unseen proportions.
Donald Trump and his unelected co-conspirators are ripping apart the US government with no regard to the legality of their actions. What’s to be done?
Below are some actions you can take. If you have others to suggest, please share them with us by contacting our newsletter editor, Mary Jane Gore, at communications@cvilledems.org.
Thank you for all you do,
Nancy Damon and Josh Throneburg
Now that President Biden will not seek reelection, the Cville Dems are ready to get behind our new nominees for President and Vice President (latter announcement coming soon), Senator Kaine, Congressional candidate Gloria Witt, and all the other Democratic candidates.
It’s a sad day for America when an ex-President is indicted.
“Gov. Glenn Youngkin has proposed significant investments to begin to catch up after decades of underfunding critical mental health care programs. While I applaud the governor for his intentions, I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind him and my colleagues in the General Assembly that these proposed investments should be viewed as the floor, not the ceiling. If our goal is to keep people out of crisis, then we have more work to do. The governor’s plan is a crisis-first response, closely resembling that of Arizona’s. The premise of the plan is centered around regional crisis centers with the idea that these centers would service individuals in need faster, get police officers out of emergency rooms, and take pressure off of ERs and hospitals — all policies that we can agree on and ultimately support. There’s no question that we need this response, but instead of having a “crisis-first mentality” we can do more to fix our broken system now.”
The Charlottesville Democratic Committee deplores Governor Youngkin’s appointment of Bert Ellis to the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia. Ellis has repeatedly and loudly denounced the University’s efforts at Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Two years ago, he traveled to the University Grounds and attempted to deface with a razor blade a poster with which he disagreed, which a University student had hung on her door. Most alarmingly, when he was co-chair of the University Union in the 1970’s, he refused to invite a speaker on gay rights because of his opposition to homosexuality, and he invited a notorious eugenicist to a public forum at the University to present his belief that Black people are lower in intelligence than White people.
